Oiler girls, St. John boys move into first place

ST. JOHN 38, CENTRAL PLAINS 32 — St. John's Emmett Delp scored 20 points to ignite a hard-fought 38-32 Central Prairie League basketball victory that pushed the Tigers (12-5, 5-1 CPL) into first place with Victoria.

Delp scored 15 second-half points, 10 in the third period that led to a 27-22 lead. Brody Vieux added seven points. Easton Alpers provided a spark with a 3-pointer, two lob passes to Delp and two steals.

Brodie Crites scored 17 points to lead the Oilers, who converted 10 of 38 field goals (26%) with 17 turnovers against aggressive Tiger defense. The Oilers connected on 3 of 21 3-point goals (14%). Rylan Siemsen added seven points.

CENTRAL PLAINS GIRLS 35, ST. JOHN 28 — Marilyn Soeken scored 17 points to spark Central Plains past St. John 35-28 in Friday's showdown for first place in the Central Prairie League girls division. Maggie Strouse added 10 points.

The Oilers (13-3, 5-0 CPL) claim first place keyed by stifling defense and double teams that limited the Tigers to 28 points and 11 of 39 shooting. St. John's Mia Meyer scored 15 points and Lydia Reed added six points. 

Defending CPL champion St. John (11-5, 5-1) stopped the Oilers' 67-game league winning streak last year that also snapped the Tigers' 29-game losing streak to the Oilers.
