ST. JOHN GIRLS  43, CENTRAL PLAINS 25 – St. John’s girls ended a 29-game losing streak to 8-time state champion Central Plains with a dominating 43-25 semifinal victory in the St. John Midwinter Classic.

The Oilers have won 29 consecutive games against St. John since 2012.

This is the first of three potential matchups between the two powerhouses. The Oilers will host the Tigers in a league contest this February, as well as, a potential substate grudge match between the two teams. St. John is the host site for a loaded 1A D1 substate.

Central Plains coach Pat Stiles said the Oilers will live and learn.

“We’ll see them again in crucial match-ups. We’ll take this loss and learn from it.”

The Oilers were trailing 14-2 at the end of the first quarter, but picked up some momentum going into the second half. The Tigers proved to be too much for the Oilers

However, after extending their lead to 18 points at the end of the third quarter.

The Tigers used 6-2 post Lydia Reed to their advantage with 18 points. Heidi Fisher contributed 9 points.

The Oilers put up a fight, with strong performances from Marilyn Soeken with 16 points. Grace Lamatsch chipped in six points. The Oilers made five 2-pointers and four 3-pointers.

WICHITA SUNRISE GIRLS 56, MACKSVILE 41 – Macksville’s Mayce Russell held her own with 18 points in a splendid effort in a 56-41 semifinal loss ti Wichita Sunrise at the St. Joh Midwinter Classic.

Sunrise is talented with international players featuring Sandra Hracka (21), Marija Sikic, Annika Moore (12) and Nela Sharynak (12) in double figures.
