DODGE CITY – Dodge City’s hot-hitting Marisela Landa drilled four homers with eight RBIs as the Red Demons swept the Great Bend Panthers 13-4 and 14-13 in Thursday’s wild Western Athletic Conference softball doubleheader.
Dodge City (7-1, 4-0 WAC) takes over first place in the WAC. Great Bend (4-6, 2-2 WAC) beat Dodge City 7-3 in Tuesday’s single non-league game.
DODGE CITY 13, PANTHERS 4 (G1) – Landa popped two homers with four RBIs and the Red Demons clubbed nine extra-base hits off pitcher Jordan Turner.
The Panthers led 2-0 when Pamela Bujanda’s single scored Paige Thexton and Brenna Bownes. Taryn Coon scored on a bunt and Breanna Gutierrez (passed ball) and Landa (HP) scored without a hit for a 3-2 lead.
Brittany Lomas scored on Raemie Lopp’s triple for a 4-2 lead. The Panthers tied it 4-4 as Melyne Fletchall singled home Grace Rowland and Brooke McReynolds stole home.
Landa’s three-run home scored Lomas and Gutierrez for a 7-4 lead. Ashlyn Lembright doubled home Rocelyn Miller. Lopp hit a two-run homer followed by Landa’s homer to key a five-run sixth inning. Miller doubled home Camryn Lenz.
DODGE CITY 14, PANTHERS 13 (G2) – Sydney Unruh led a 13-run Panther offense with five RBIs.
Great Bend led 6-0 after a half-inning, but Dodge City rallied with 14 runs. Five Panther errors gift wrapped seven unearned runs for the Red Demons.
Analiz Rivas hit a two-run single and Paige Thexton hit an RBI single to key a six-run first inning. Lopp hit a two-run double and Landa ripped a two-run homer for a 6-4 score.
Easha Potts ripped a three-run home in a five-run second inning for a 9-6 lead. Panther Laura Daniel scored on Halle Post’s RBi for a 9-7 score
Addyson Froetschner’s two-run third-inning double gave the Red Demons an 11-7 lead. Rivas scored on Fletchall’s fourth-inning single and Unruh’s double scored Bujanda, Grace Rowland and Fletchall for an 11-11 tie.
Landa’s two-run homer keyed a three-run fourth inning for a 14-11 lead. Thexton scored on a groundball and Bownes scored on a bases-loaded fifth-inning walk for a 14-13 score.
But Dodge City pitcher Lopp shut out the Panthers in the final two innings.
