Great Bend girls lose in finals, 57-27

HAYS — Class 6A Manhattan rolled past the Great Bend girls 57-27 in Saturday’s championship game of the Gerald Mitchell Hays Basketball Shootout. The Indians led 15-5 after one quarter and 30-17 at halftime. All-tournament pick Carley Brack led the Panthers with 15 points and scored in double figures all three games. The Panthers missed a chance to play closer with 6 of 20 free throw shooting one night after making 21 of 31 free throws. The Panthers return home Dec. 11 against Junction City.
Madison Witte paced the Indians with 12 points and Haleigh Harper (11) and Garrin Williams (10) also scored in double figures. The Indians outscored the Panthers 15-3 from 3-point range.
Two wins over Olathe North and Hays High boosted the Great Bend Panther girls into the championship game.

GREAT BEND 57, HAYS HIGH 56 — Great Bend’s Carley Brack converted the tying and game-winning free throws to shock Hays High 57-56 in Friday’s semifinals to reach the championship game of the Gerald Mitchell Hays Basketball Shootout. Hays High’s Haley George handed the Indians a 56-55 lead with six seconds left. But the Indians fouled Brack on the ensuing inbounds play with the Panthers 90 feet away from their own basket. Brack converted 10 of 13 free throws. The Panthers outscored the Indians 21-7 from the free throw line.
A desperation heave by Audra Schmeidler hit the backboard.
Brack scored a game high 19 points and Camryn Dunekack added 14 points for the Panthers, who led 31-23 at halftime fueled by a 14-2 run. The Panthers converted 21 of 31 free throws.
George led Hays High with 12 points and Schmeidler added 11 points. The Indians made 7 of 18 free throws to miss a chance at a victory.
