HAYS — Sylvan Grove’s Legion baseball team rallied for a 5-4 victory over Ellinwood on Colin Obermueller’s game-winning single in Wednesday’s AA Russell Zone baseball tournament. The game was moved to Hays from Russell because of a unplayable field.
Ellinwood (9-10) plays Thursday against the Marysville-Smith Center loser.
Ellinwood led 4-1 after 41/2 innings. Sylvan Grove led 1-0 when Dylan Fry scored a first-inning run.
Ellinwood’s Levi Swenson scored a second-inning run on a double steal with Evan Johanning. Brady Stephenson singled home David Hammeke and Kyler Doll for a 3-1 lead after three innings. Stephenson’s fifth-inning single scored Hammeke, but Doll was thrown out at home on a throw by Kyle Shipley — the game’s most critical play.
Sylvan Grove’s Fry scored on a fifth-inning balk and Drew Biggs tripled home Tyler Stanley for a 4-3 score. in the seventh inning, Tyler Stanley’s triple scored Fry and Colin Obermueller’s RBI single scored Stanley with the game-ending run off losing pitcher Levi Swenson.
