STERLING — Great Bend’s Mayra Ramirez broke the Panthers’ school record (19:13.8) while capturing medalist honors at Thursday’s Sterling Invitational cross country meet. The meet was held in 45-degree weather with light rain and mist falling.

Ellinwood’s Erin Hammeke (19:39.3) placed third and teammate Ashtin Klepper (20:12.5) finished eighth.

ST. JOHN RUNNER-UP – Seventh-place medalist A.J. Miller (17:04.1) and 10th-place medalist Mason Osborne (17:09.1) paced the St. John boys to a runner-up finish with 63 points behind champion Buhler with 22 points.

Cashe McVey, 15th,  Wrangler Walker, 19th, 17:23.7; and Hunter Hanson, 21st, 17:53.3; counted in the Tigers’ team score.

Larned’s Brayden Lothman earned fifth medalist honors (16:54.5).

MACKSVILLE — Ninth-grader Abigail Ibarra (21:56.9) captured medalist honors in the freshmen division to lead the Mustangs. Itzel Garcia (22:05.5) placed 25th and Gabe Wolf (18:49.1) finished 41st in the varsity division. In the junior varsity division, Anna Suiter (26:57.6) placed ninth and Kyler Evans (20:12.3) finished 11th.

Macksville coach Mike Hullman said the Mustangs ran personal season-bests in the cool and calm conditions.

"Wow, what a meet we had," Hullman said. "We ran extremely well with all runners setting new PRs for the season.  The conditions were great for running, cool with a mist in the air. Our runners took full advantage of the weather conditions and a fast course.  We had several earn medals with the freshmen girls dominating their race.  This amazing effort sets us up well. This gives confidence that we have been searching for.  They showed what they can do when they challenge themselves.  Some of them even said that they should have given more."
