PARK CITY — Great Bend's 4-time state qualifier Jace Schartz was one move, one point away from a 5A state championship medal.
Salina Central's No. 5 ranked Abram Owings delivered the match-winning takedown for a 4-1 victory in overtime in the 165-pound championship match.
The match was the definition of Owings' thrill of victory and Schartz's agony of defeat.
Owings gained a slight leverage on Schartz (29-7, 165) in overtime and was awarded the 3-point takedown.
"Those finals matches can come down to a judgment of the ref," said Great Bend coach Lars Lueders. "It was hard to tell from our angle. I talked to the refs and made sure they talked about it. That's all you can do. The ref said he had control of Jace's arms around his waist."
Both wrestlers escaped the down position for a 1-1 tie in regulation. Both wrestlers stayed on their feet and kept the opponent at arm's length during the three periods during the intense championship match.
"I know Jace understands he had a great high school wrestling career," Lueders said. "Tonight doesn't take away from his accomplishments. He placed at state three times and broke a state record for tech falls. Jace beat quality opponents. His quarterfinal match with Carroll's Eli Means was a state finals type-match. The 165 class was a high-level bracket, a deep weight class."
Schartz edged Wichita Carroll's No. 3 ranked Eli Means 4-3 in the quarterfinal and crushed Andover's No. 2 ranked Dresden Beard 17-2 in the semifinals.
No. 4 ranked Cal Schartz (35-11, 113) placed fourth with a hard-fought 7-2 setback to Newton's Wade Stubbs. No. 2 Cruz Cannon def. Schartz, 7-6 in the quarterfinals.
No. 3 ranked Trenton Kern (28-8, 215) placed fifth a 7-4 victory over Salina Central's Tyrus Young.
First-round winners Hayden Liles (132), Triston Tomlinson (138) and Hayden Kelly (150) lost quarterfinal matches. Cal Schartz and Kelly lost 1-point decisions.
Great Bend scored 68 points to place 13th in the team standings. Goddard (173) captured the 5A team championship.
