SALINA – Topeka West converted four consecutive penalty kicks to outlast Great Bend 4-3 for fifth place in the Salina Soccer Tournament. Two Panthers missed their tries in extra time. The Panthers (1-3) travel to Hays Tuesday.

The Panthers trailed 3-0, but broke loose for three consecutive goals. Alex Alonzo tied the score 3-3 with 1:19 on a penalty kick after a Charger foul near the goal. Angel Armendariz fed a perfect long pass to Diego Pasos for the Panthers' second goal.

GREAT BEND 1, JUNCTION CITY 0 – Great Bend's Ricardo Cruz scored the game-winning goal as the Panthers edged Junction City 1-0 to secure a fifth-place berth in Thursday’s Salina South soccer tournament.

Cruz scored a goal midway in the second half.

"First goal of the season, it was exciting," Cruz said. "I had to celebrate that one."

The Panthers (1-2) play Topeka West at 2 p.m. Saturday.

"Ricardo works hard in midfield. We got the result we wanted," said Great Bend coach Chuy Loera. "Moving forward, hopefully that can continue."

ST. MARYS 1, GREAT BEND 0 – St. Marys Bob Averkamp broke up a scoreless game with the game-winning goal for a 1-0 victory over Great Bend in Tuesday’s Salina South soccer tournament. The Panthers controlled play at times, but St. Marys goalie Paul Gresham recorded two saves.
