Oilers girls ride 106-game winning streak into substate

The No. 1 ranked Central Plains girls (22-0) have won 106 consecutive basketball games heading to Thursday's 1A Russell substate.

CENTRAL PLAINS GIRLS 62, OTIS-BISON 32 – Central Plains all-stater Emily Ryan scored 24 points with seven assists and six steals as the Oilers rolled past rival Otis-Bison 62-32 in Sunday’s 1A Sylvan Grove regional championship.

Averly Hurley scored 11 points. Delaney Rugan added eight pointsand Rachel Latamsch had six steals. The Oilers converted many of the Cougars’ 35 turnovers into easy transition baskets. 

“We played really good defense, forcing 35 turnovers,” said Central Plains coach Pat Stiles.

The Oilers led 35-19 at halftime and triggered a running clock on a 3-pointer by Rachel Lamatsch for a 58-27 lead with five minutes left.

Central Plains (22-0) advances to Thursday’s 1A Russell substate against Osborne (11-10). If the Oiler girls and boys both reach Saturday’s championship, the game times will be adjusted to allow for travel time.

Kinsley/Macksville split pair KINSLEY — Kinsley/Macksville pitchers Kendall Grippin and Woodrow Lancaster combined for a 1-hit shutout for a 4-0 baseball victory over Bucklin. The Red Aces won the second game 6-4. KINSLEY 4, BUCKLIN 0 (G1) — Kinsley's Grippin struck out nine batters and Lancaster struck out six batters/ Bucklin's Jack Willems singled for the Red Aces hit. Grippin doubled home Lancaster in the first inning. Grippin doubled home Joshua Stuckey in a 3-run fifth inning. Anthony Meza and Diego Esparza scored on an error for a 4-0 lead. BUCKLIN 6, KINSLEY 4 (G2) — Kinsley's pitchers issued 13 walks that led to a 6-4 setback. Stucky scored on a groundout and Lancaster scored on a stolen base for a 2-0 lead. Bucklin's Jake Herd and Kolson Cook scored after three walks and an error for a 2-2 tie. Kinsley's Trenton Anderson scored on a walk. Bucklin's Jack Herd scored on a walk for 3-3 tie.
