On Sunday, the United States Tennis Association Adult Open tennis tournament finished up with Michael Koch and Allison Johnson combining to win the mixed open doubles.
For Koch, it was the second division title in as many days. For Johnson, it was a competition to prepare her for the upcoming college season.
“These smaller tournaments are a whole lot less stressful,” Koch said. “This one, I just felt a little more comfortable. It was just a lot of fun.”
Johnson has signed to play for University of Nebraska Omaha. She said this was her first competition of the summer and that she hoped it would help prepare her for the collegiate grind.
“This is the only (tournament) I’ve played in this summer, which is probably not good,” Johnson said. “I’ve been playing a lot, though. I just haven’t been competing at all. It’s good to get some in before practice starts.”
The duo from Omaha, Neb., went 3-0 in the round robin competition, losing five sets out of 29.
Koch said he has played in three competitions per month over the summer, hoping to prepare him to walk on at Creighton.
Ellinwood’s Lyle Stickney and Michelle Miller went 2-1, finishing in second place.
Father/daughter duo Randy Moyers and Macy Moyers went 1-2.
Nick Moyers and Brianna Schartz finished fourth at 0-3.
