Kansas Legion cancels postseason baseball

TOPEKA — Kansas American Legion baseball has canceled postseason tournaments, However, summer baseball teams may be free to compete. If any Kansas teams do choose to play baseball in 2020, that team’s sponsor will be responsible for all scheduling and insurance.

Great Bend’s Legion-based baseball program is still exploring an option to play a downsized summer schedule. Contact Darrin Hall (417-291-6133) for information about a Legion-age baseball team.

Currently, practice field are shut down until May 18 by Governor Laura Kelly. Larned, Pratt, Russell and Hoisington are other towns which may pursue some summer baseball.

Newton and Salina teams intend on playing summer baseball.

The Salina Falcons, Salina Hawks and Salina Eagles baseball teams will also compete. A possible independent postseason is being discussed. 

Newton’s Legion baseball program plans to start practice May 18 with games to start June 2. There are myriad of bridges to cross — from equipment handling to social distancing guidelines — if teams practice May 18. Newton is scheduled to play Andover, Buhler, Emporia, Hesston, Hutchinson, McPherson, Ottawa and Salina.

Macksville's Morgan Grippin is committed to play baseball at Friends University at Wichita. Grippin is a pitcher/first baseman player for the Kinsley/Macksville baseball team. Grippin (2-0) has struck out 16 batters in eight innings with a 0.875 earned run average.
