HALSTEAD GIRLS 49, LARNED 38 – Halstead’s Jordy Schroeder scored 15 points off the bench for a 49-38 Central Kansas League basketball victory over pesky Larned. Kaci Young scored 10 points and Dominique Schutte added nine points for Central Kansas leader Halstead (13-1, 4-0 CKL).

Larned’s defense did strong work against the talented Halstead’s starters here, but the Dragons’ bench players was the difference. Bailey Bernal added eight points off the bench.

Larned (7-7, 2-1 CKL) was paced by Akielah Collins with 17 points and Jadyn Crosby with eight points. The Indians converted 14 of 43 field goals, 5 of 9 free throws and 3 of 12 from long range.

Both teams relied on their strength, full-court pressure defense, and there was a lot of physical contact in the game that the officials let go. Halstead committed 17 turnovers and Larned 19, but Halstead convert several of those turnovers into points.

“We got tired in the second half," said Larned coach Jerrod Smith. "It was a physical game. Both teams pressed,  so it was wearing. We didn’t shoot it as well because of that. We had great effort. I'm pleased with how we competed. Halstead is an excellent team. I told our girls, ‘We are getting there.' "

The two teams battled to a 11-9 Halstead advantage at the end of the first quarter but the Lady Dragons outscored Larned 15-7 in the second quarter for a 26-16 halftime edge and were able to mostly maintain that advantage throughout the second half.

Halstead heads to Hesston Tuesday for a key CKL showdown. Halstead made 18 of 43 field goals and 4 of 17 from the 3-point line.

Larned converted 14 of 43 field goal attempts (33%) and 3 of 12 3-point attempts.

HALSTEAD 47, LARNED 42 – Larned’s hard luck continues as the Indians’ 3-point third period cost them in a 47-42 Central Kansas League basketball loss to Halstead. Halstead (4-10, 1-3 CKL) was paced by Kohen Corona with 21 points and Braxton Creed with 11 points.

Larned (2-12, 0-3 CKL) led 22-14 at halftime, but was outscored 16-3 in the third period after committing 2 of 10 shots. Cade Colglazier scored 15 points with 11 rebounds and Carson Shaver added 13 points.

Halstead outscored the Indians 16-3 to turn a 22-14 deficit into a 30-25 lead after three quarters. The Indians cut the margin to two points on several occasions, the Indians could never regain the lead.

A frustrated Larned team walked away from this game feeling like this was a game that they could have, should have, won. Scoring droughts in a quarter have plagued the Indians all season.

Larned coach Luke Steinlage is puzzled by the frequent scoring droughts.

“Hey, if I knew that we would long ago have fixed it," he said. "We go away from what is working and it snowballs on us. Our guys gave great effort, but we didn’t get good shots in that third quarter, The ones we got, we missed.”

A cold shooting team in the first half, Halstead, now 4-10,  turned the tables in the second half as they made over 50%, 13 of 25. They finished the game 18 of 43 for 42% but struggled at the free throw line, making just 4 of 14 but they made just enough for the win.

The Indians responded with a 17-point fourth quarter but it was too late. Th Indians made 18 of 45 field goal attempts
