WICHITA – Powerhouse Wichita North defeated Great Bend 7-1 in Saturday’s Titan Classic red division championship game. The Panthers defeated Wichita West and Wichita Homeschool to reach the championship game.
The Panthers (2-2) play Hays High at 6:30 p.m. at home Tuesday.
Longtime Great Bend boys soccer coach Chuy Loera celebrated an 8-3 victory Thursday over Wichita Homeschool as the winningest coach in Panther history. Loera owns a 52-72-3 record in eight seasons.
Scoring two goals were Alex Alcala, Ricardo Cruz and Ramiro Rocha. Victor Reyes and Jonathan Lira each scored a goal at Wichita South High School.
The Panthers (2-1) qualify for Saturday's Wichita South Red Classic championship match against Wichita North, a shocking 3-2 winner over Liberal.
"It gives our guys a lot of confidence after winning two games to reach the championship match," Loera said. "It was good to earn two wins after the way we started our season."
Great Bend's soccer team edged Wichita West 14-13 on penalty kicks after a 1-1 tie in regulation at Monday's Wichita South Classic.
The Panthers converted an incredible 14 of 15 penalty kicks.
"I've never seen anything like that," Loera said. "You have to try a different player each time until you run through your roster. We had players who had never shot a penalty shot who came through for us. It was a team effort."
