CLAFLIN – Central Plains athletics director Pat Stiles is adding cross country coach to his impressive resume.

Two-time state cross country qualifier Peyton Ryan graduated after placing 36th and 37th at 1A state after fourth, sixth, seventh-and 13th-place Central Prairie League finishes.

Two-year veteran Cale Thompson just missed qualifying for state with an 11th-place finish along with a 27th-place finish. Sophomore Alden Metro finished 53rd at regionals last year.

The Oiler twosome trains before school on hot days, or right after school when cooler weather arrives.

“Cale will have a good shot at qualifying for state cross country,” Stiles said. “His goal is to qualify for the state cross country meet.”

Thompson and Metro are 3-sport athletes who compete in basketball and tennis.

“They’re busy playing basketball and tennis during June and July, and they were able to start running in the first part of August.”
