Cardinals salvage softball split

HOISINGTON – Hoisington pitcher Ellie Crawford struck out six batters to help the Cardinals (9-1, 7-1 CKL) edge Hesston 3-2 to gain a split of Friday’s softball twin bill. Hesston (8-2, 6-2 CKL) won the opener 4-3.

HESSTON 4, CARDINALS 3 (G1) – Hesston’s Brenlyn Richmond tripled home Wendy Roth, Elyse Griffin and Justice Large to cap a 4-run seven inning off Cardinal pitcher Jordyn Boxberger. Emma Gudeman scored on an error.

Hoisington’s Mollie Steiner scored on Crawford’s single. Tricia Schremmer scored on Steiner’s single. Claire Crutcher scored on Kashlin Beck’s single.

CARDINALS 3, HESSTON 2 (G2) – Hoisington’s Crawford singled home Beck in a 2-run third inning for the game-winner. M. Sneath scored the Cardinals’ first run by stealing home. Beck tripled home Steiner in the third inning.

Hesston’s Griffin doubled home Roth and Griffin scored on Large’s third inning sacrifice fly.

MEADE 60, ST. JOHN 39 — St. John Tiger Quade Smith ended his high school basketball career strong with an 11-point night in a 60-39 substate basketball setback to Meade. Smith played with a bandaged right wrist after returning from a late-season injury. St. John (12-9) was paced by Braxton Alpers with 12 points. Alpers also missed valuable playing time with an ankle injury. South Central beat Meade 47-46 in the 1A semifinals.
