Bat Cats split twin bill against Sluggers

Barton Cougar assistant baseball coach Alex King enjoyed a happy homecoming at Al Burns Memorial Field Wednesday. King directed the Fort Collins Foxes to an 8-7 non-league baseball victory over the Bat Cats.

ROSE HILL – Bat Cats starter Hunter Murray worked 51/3 innings to spark Great Bend past the Rose Hill Sluggers 5-1 in Monday's Sunflower Collegiate League baseball game. 

Rose Hill roared past the Bat Cats 10-2 in Monday's nightcap. The Bat Cats (4-5, 3-3 Sunflower) drops into fifth place. The Bat Cats and Rose Hill meet at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Wichita State's Eck Stadium.

BAT CATS 5, SLUGGERS 1 (G1)  Sam Houston State pitcher Murray struck out five batters and yielded a sixth-inning homer to Ross Cadena. Reliever Ryan Peters from Sam Houston State struck out three batters in 12/3 innings.

Collin Meinert led the offense with three singles and two runs batted home. Leadoff batter Alex Rodgers doubled twice and scored three runs.

Rodgers scored a second-inning run on Chandler Bloomer's groundout. Jake Baker and Tyler Henry singled in the fourth inning. Baker advanced on an error and scored on a wild pitch for a 2-0 lead.

Meinert singled home Rodgers after a fifth-inning double for a 3-0 lead. Rodgers doubled home Ryan Thompson and Meinert repeated his production with a run-scoring single to score Rodgers for a 5-1 lead.

SLUGGERS 10, BAT CATS 2 (G2) – Rose Hill's Hunter Gibson drilled a three-run homer and had four RBIs. Zach Baxley drove home three runs with four hits. The Sluggers roughed up Bat Cats starter Adrian Talavera and Grant Thompson for five runs apiece.

Bat Cat Trent Touchet singled home Rodgers in the first inning. Rodgers and Chandler Bloomer singled, but Jake Baker and Brady Michel were retired to end the threat.

Slugger Baxley singled home Ross Cadena and Mason Hartman scored a first-inning run. Gibson doubled home Cadena in the third inning. Chance Ragsdale scored on Seth Kenagy's sacrifice fly for a 3-2 score.

Rose Hill scored the final seven runs. Cadena drove home Hartman and Baxley singled home Gibson in the fifth inning. Baxley's seventh-inning single scored Matt Johnson. Gibson's three-run homer scored Johnson and Cadena after Johnson's single scored Tanner Leslie.
