Area athletes head to Wichita

WICHITA – Hoisington’s defending pole vault champion Josiah Ball (14-6) is ranked first in Friday’s 6:30 p.m. 3A pole vault.

Last year’s 3A state champion Shellamae Farmer (11-6) will be challenged by Smoky Valley’s Breanne Peters (12-0) and Hesston’s Ashley Lehman (12-0) at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Hoisington sprinter Marley Bittel is ranked second in the 100 meters (12.37) behind Lehman (12.35) and third in the 200 meters (25.69).

Bittel joins Farmer, Mallory Mooney and Kelsi Maier on the second-ranked 400-meter relay (49.94) behind Burlington (49.15).

Pawnee Heights Tiger Brady Carlson is ranked first in Saturday’s 1A triple jump (44-61/2).

St. John’s Quade Smith is top ranked in the 800 meters (1:59.84).

Larned’s 100-meter hurdler Cara Herbert is ranked second (15.33) behind Burlington’s Kelly Hoback (14.51).

Macksville’s Mayce Russell is ranked seventh in the 1A javelin (121-1) after winning the gold medal in 2023.
