1A LAKE BARTON — St. John's 4-time state qualifier Quade Smith (17:20.31) finished ninth at Lake Barton to qualify after placing 13th, 14th and 49th at the 1A state cross country meet. Stafford's Joel Valadez (17:17.32) placed seventh to qualify for 1A state.
"Quade is running his fourth state race, which is pretty special," said St. John coach Joel Delp. "He has a great shot at a top 10 finish and a PR on the state course."
St. John (67) finished fifth to qualify as a team with 18th Aaden Gonzalez, 18:08.29; 23rd Emmett Delp, 18:35.96; 37th Garrett Dunn, 19:25.37; 42nd Liam Knight, 19:39.22; 45th Jayce Feril, 20:03.6; and 51st Kaden Foote, 20:53.83.
"We ran at Wamego earlier and had a great race," Delp said. "Our guys are anxious to get back and see what they can can do. This is one of the fastest 1A states coming in that I remember. Our guys should be pushed to run great times. We ran some of our fastest times at regionals. We're peaking at the right time. We're freshmen, sophomores running their first state race outside of Quade. We'll gain valuable experience."
Otis-Bison's Destiny Mitchell (21:54.55) earned a fourth state trip with a 14th-place finish. Mitchell has placed 9th, 38th and 39th at state. After her run, Mitchell helped her Cougar teammates qualify for the 1A-Division 2 state volleyball tournament.
Macksville's Kennedy Butler (21:20.48) finished 11th at Lake Barton to qualify for 1A state at Wamego.
