LA CROSSE – Brynna Hammeke scored 26 points with four 3-pointers to spark the Central Plains girls past La Crosse 73-20 in Friday's Central Prairie League basketball game. Madison McGuire scored 20 points. The Oilers (16-1, 6-0) have swept 69 straight Central Prairie games since 2012-2013.

PRATT – Hoisington's Macy Hanzlick scored 20 points and sparked a game-ending 12-6 scoring run for a 40-33 Central Kansas League basketball victory over Pratt Friday. Starters Hanzlick, Livvy Brewer, Addy Mason, Jordyn Boxberger and Paige Lamatsch played all 32 minutes for Hoisington (10-7, 3-3).

BUCKLIN – Macksville's No. 2 state-ranked Mustangs overpowered Bucklin 73-52 in Friday's battle of state-ranked basketball teams. Macksville's Hector Gomez (17), Ryan Kuckelman (15) and Alexis Barron (13) scored in double figures. Kuckelman grabbed 10 rebounds. Barron had six steals and five assists.

HALSTEAD GIRLS 44, LARNED 38

HALSTEAD – Halstead's Lady Dragons outscored Larned 14-6 in the second period to hold off the Indians 44-38 in Friday's Central Kansas League basketball game.

Larned's Karley Lemuz scored a career high 21 points, 12 in the first half and Akielah Collins scored 13. Larned made 15 of 42 field goals for 36% and converted 8 of 14 free throws. Larned (2-14, 0-6) plays Hillsboro Tuesday. 

"This was the best game we’ve played," said Larned coach Jerrod Smith. "The girls are catching on that if you play this hard all the time, good things will happen. Our 23 turnovers prevented us from winning. But I'm pleased with our effort.”

The two teams battled to a 14-14 tie at the end of the first quarter. Larned’s Karley Leuz scored 10 of her points in the quarter. Larned could not maintain the pace in the second quarter and fell behind 28-20 due to some outside shooting by Halstead’s Dominique Schutte.

Larned outscored Halstead in the final two quarters, but it was simply not enough.

Halstead converted eight 3-pointers to outscore the Indians 24-0 from long range. Larned committed 23 turnovers. Halstead (7-10, 2-4) was paced by Dominique Schutte (14), Sydney Holzrichter (11) and Dalaina Schutte (9). Halstead converted 15 of 43 field goals for 34% and made 4 of 14 free throws.

HALSTEAD — Larned's boys controlled the backboards and won the turnover battle to key a 57-46 Central Kansas League basketball victory over Halstead.

Guard Ian Orth scored 17 points and converted 8 of 8 free throws to push the winning margin into double digits. Brady Hope added 11 points and Cade Colglazier nine.

“Orth was big for us in the fourth quarter," said Larned coach Luke Steinlage. "We did a lot of good things tonight, especially defense. Our defense held them in that first quarter and allowed us to get a lead. I was pleased with our defense and rebounding.”

Larned jumped out to a 13-8 first quarter lead that they never relinquished though Halstead did pull within one on three different occasions in the game. The Indians led 27-20 at halftime but the Dragons came out hot and pulled to within 31-30 before Larned put together their own run to push their margin to 39-33 after three quarters.

Though Halstead shot 55% from the field on their home court, they were able to get 29 attempts, 18 fewer than Larned. Halstead was 16 of 29 for 55% and converted 11 of 14 free throws.  The Dragons were led in scoring by Braxton Creed with 17. and 6-6 Spencer Johnson added 11.
