LARNED — Scott City Beavers proved to be rude guests Tuesday as the Beaver girls downed Larned 55-42 and the boys dominated Larned 65-28.

Jadyn Crosby scored 15 points and converted a 3-point play and a 4-point play for Larned (7-8). Cassidy Wachs added eight points and Taeten Reynolds seven. Larned made 14 of 45 field goals (31%) and converted 11 of 19 free throws.

The two teams combined to shoot 58 free throws.

Kendall Gentry scored 15 points. Avery Lewis added 10 and Katie Weathers and Piper Fox chipped in eight apiece.

The Lady Beavers (10-8) made 14 of 33 field goals (41%) but made a living at the free throw line.  Scott City made 27 of 39 free throws by driving to the basket with authority. Scott City made four second-half field goals.

“We just put them on the free throw line too much. They got 39 free throws," said Larned coach Jerrod Smith. "We’ve got to be better disciplined on defense. We can’t let one bad play lead to another. We played good defense but we struggled with our shooting.”

The girls margin was between 5-to-7 points until the fourth quarter. Scott City led 29-21 at halftime after a 16-16 tie.

Larned's improved offensive play led to a 35-34 lead. Scott City regained control and outscored Larned 15-5. Scott City doubled its margin at the free throw line.

SCOTT CITY 65, LARNED 28 —Scott City roared to a 23-5 first-quarter lead that was 47-16 by halftime, leading to a running clock in the fourth quarter. Scott City converted 11 3-pointers to outscore the Indians 33-6 from long range.

Kylier Greene led Larned with 12 points.

Jackson Rumford scored 18 points and Alex Tarango added 11 and Junior Meza 10 for Scott City (14-4). Scott City made 26 of 55 field goals (47%) and 9 of 15 free throws as coach Brian Gentry played all of his roster.

The Beavers reigned 3-point shots as they moved the ball quickly to open shooters. Combined with 11 first-half turnovers by Larned that were quickly turned into points and the inside-outside scoring of Rumford, the Beavers established early why they are one of the better teams in western Kansas.

“We knew Scott City was one of the best teams in western Kansas. They showed it tonigh," Larned coach Luke Steinlage. "Rumford is a load inside and he steps out and makes 3-pointers. We were missing a ball handler, and it showed against their press.”

Larned (5-10) made 11 of 35 field goals (31%) and 4 of 9 free throws. The Indians committed 21 turnovers against the ball-hawking Beavers. Sophomore Kylier Greene had a solid night on the inside with 12 points and .Carson Shaver added five.

Larned travels to Ellsworth Thursday and Pratt Friday.
