CENTRAL PLAINS GIRLS 54, HOISINGTON 34

HOISINGTON – Central Plains all-stater Brynna Hammeke scored 21 points to spark the No. 1 Oilers past Hoisington 54-34 in Friday's non-league basketball season opener. The Oiler girls are a seven-time defending state basketball champion. Madison McGuire scored 15 points and had 10 steals. Kassidy Nixon contributed 13 points, eight rebounds, 8 steals and four assists in addition to her sparkling defense.

Macy Hanzlick scored 12 points and Kylee Hahn added seven free throws for Hoisington (0-1).  The Cardinals converted 13 of 19 free throws.

HOISINGTON – Hoisington's Leyton Haxton scored 19 points as the Cardinals roared to a 25-6 first-quarter lead and rolled past Central Plains 68-26 in Friday's non-league basketball opener. The Cardinals dominated the opening quarter with flawless play. Bralen Thompson scored 13 points. Chase Steinert contributed six rebounds and six assists. 

Peyton Ryan scored nine points with three steals and three assists for Central Plains (0-1).

OTIS – The new-look Otis-Bison Cougars earned a victory for first-year girls  coach Jade Winter with a hard-fought 41-37 non-league basketball victory over Wilson.

The Cougars placed Johannah Baalman (10), Macie Wiltse (10) and Halee Morrison (10) in double figures for a perfectly balanced offense. Wilson's Anna Thielen and Tyra Meyer each scored 14 points.

STAFFORD – Stafford's Colton Minks converted the game-winning 3-point goal to rally the Trojans past St. John 38-37 in Friday's non-league basketball game. Stafford's Tai Hildebrand converted a layup after steal for a 35-35 tie.

Minks scored 14 points and Ashton Harter, Josh Hildebrand and Dakota Rodriguez each scored seven points. Stafford (1-0) beat Stafford County rival St. John for the first time in 22 years.

MEADE – No. 4 state-ranked 1A Pawnee Heights missed two chances to tie in a heartbreaking 66-65 non-league loss to Meade in Friday's basketball opener 

"Davin Hamby missed an open three for the tie and Alec Carlson had his 3-pointer blocked," said Pawnee Heights coach Rick Carlson. "Dakota Ryan got the rebound and shot a 2-pointer as time ran out."

Alec Carlson led the Tigers with 21 points and Adam Hands contributed 20 points. The Tigers converted 18 of 36 free throws.

Meade's Trace Hedgwood and Brock Keith led four players in double figures with 12 points apiece.
