LUFKIN, Texas -- Great Bend's Eric Kuhn captured a Rocky Mountain Race Week division driving his 1955 Chevrolet 210 Sedan. Kuhn averaged 7.49 over the course with a best time of 7.42. The Chevy is his wife's vehicle she used to operate at Great Bend High School.
The drag-and-drive 6-day race started in Lufkin and traveled to Monroe, La. and Ennis, Texas in 90-degree September temperatures and humid conditions. The longest 2-day trek covered 430 miles. Drivers are required to race each day after traveling to the next site. About 175 drivers finished with about 250 starting the journey.
"I was very fortunate. The stars were aligned for me," Kuhn said. "This victory is way beyond anything I've ever won."
A youtube.com file (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COlvMjBpfFo) shows Kuhn talking about his Texas victory in the Ultimate Radial division. Kuhn also won Midwest regional races in Oklahoma and at the Kansas/Missouri border.
"We had no expectations of winning this thing," Kuhn said. "There's a lot fast cars in the world. We had a good week. We ran in the 7.40s that first day."
The Rocky Mountain race attracts numerous American entries plus drivers from Australia.
Great Bend's Travis Boltman also won his Rocky Mountain Race Week class.
Great Bend's Wade Sunderland also competed favorably in his division.
