The Great Bend Bat Cats closed out the 2024 baseball season with a sweep of the Wichita Diamond Kings 7-1 and 5-1 Saturday. The Bat Cats (21-15, 18-14 Jayhawk) finish without an NBC World Series bid.

The defending NBC champion Hutchinson Monarchs, Derby Twins, Kansas Cannons and Haysville Aviators are Jayhawk League entries.

"We were short of our goal, but it was a good summer. I'm proud of this group," said Bat Cats coach Roger Ward. "You get a group together for a couple months and you grow attached. The end is always hard."

Ward appreciated his junior-college heavy roster, which earned consistent fan support.

"It's been a pleasure to coach them," Ward said. "We had good young men. They've learned a few things about life. It paid off. The guys were involved in the community. Great Bend is a strong baseball community."

BAT CATS 7, DIAMOND KINGS 1 (G1) – Parker Volski recorded a season high eight strikeouts to spark the Bat Cats to an opening victory.

Kyler Horsman scored two runs and drove in a run. Horsman’s infield single scored Joey Marker in the first inning. Ian George singled in Horsman after a third-inning double.

The Bat Cats scored five sixth-inning runs. Kade Goeke singled home Horsman after a single and hit batter. Garrett Ninness singled in Jhett Creel. Kyle Walker’s double scored Goeke and Ninness scored on an error. Walker scored on Jesse Ponce’s sacrifice fly.

BAT CATS 5, DIAMOND KINGS 1 (G2) –  Bat Cat pitcher Andrew McCarthy (5-1, 4.77 ERA) closed out the season with five shutout innings and five strikeouts to spark a 5-1 victory.

Reliever Tyler Stuhlsatz (2.30 ERA) and standout closer Julio Heredia (0.65 ERA) combined for the final three innings. Bat Cats Player of the Year Heredia (Krugerville, Texas) struck out 50 batters in 272/3 innings.
