Barton swimmers earn top 10 finishes

EDMOND, Okla. – The Barton Community College swimming teams opened the 2024-25 season this past weekend competing in the Sam Freas Invitational.

The Cougars racked eight top 10 performances while clocking a pair of new program top 10 times over the one-day 26-event schedule.

A trio of Cougar men chalked up top 10 performances, in addition to, the squads 200-yard medley relay team.

Making his collegiate debut, Arnaldo Guimaraes collected three of the Cougars seven top-10 performances. The freshman recorded the highest finish of the afternoon with a third place 5:13.84 in the 500-yard freestyle. Guimaraes added a second top-five finish in the 200-yard freestyle with the fifth quickest time 2:15.78 before concluding his Barton debut sixth quickest 1:00.32 in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Freshman Mateo Wallet added a pair of top 10 finishes in two 100-yard events with a seventh placing (49.93) in the freestyle and ninth stoppage (56.90) in the backstroke.

Cameron Sein concluded Barton's individual top-10 placings in the ever exciting 50-yard freestyle clocking a fifth best time of 22.14.

The final top-10 performance came on the team side with the 200-yard medley squad of Wallet, Guimaraes, Joel DeFever and Joao Ribeiro piecing a ninth fastest time of 1:41.02.

On the women's side, Katy Alvarez fashioned an impressive Barton debut recording a pair of program top-10 performances. The freshman opened her day with a 17th placing in the 100-yard breaststroke for the program's eighth quickest stoppage of 1:17.09. Alvarez concluded her collegiate debut finishing 12th overall in the 200-yard breaststroke with the 10th fastest mark in the Cougar record books at 2:50.97.

Sophomore Elena Lara assembled the highest finish on the women's side in the 200-yard butterfly touching the wall seventh with a stoppage of 2:22.19.

Barton will stay in state for its next meet coming up Friday in Lawrence, Kansas, competing in the Sunflower Showdown at the Robinson Natatorium.
