WICHITA — Joseph J. Schartz, 80, passed away Dec. 10, 2024 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. He was born Nov. 2, 1944 in Great Bend, the son of Edmund and Helen Birzer Schartz.
A longtime Larned resident he was a graduate of Larned High School Class of 1963, farmer, and a machinist at Doerr Metal before moving to Wichita in the late 1980’s where he was a machinist at Hay and Forage, Hesston. Joseph collected NASCAR memorabilia, enjoyed going to NASCAR races, casinos, and dancing, and going to the park to listen to the bands. He was a member of Derby Senior Center and attended local senior center activities. He was of the Catholic faith and served in the United States Army National Guard.
Survivors include son, John (Chantell) Schartz, Derby; three daughters, Molly Schartz, Hoisington, Regina Brown, Hoisington, Heidi Schartz, Great Bend; sister, Mathilda Bowman, Hutchinson; sister-in-law, Donna Schartz, Manhattan; 14 grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Edmund Schartz, George Schartz, and brother-in-law, Charles Bowman.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, 2024 at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel with Father Anselm Eke, MSP presiding. Inurnment will be in Larned Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites.
