ELLINWOOD — John Schartz passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Friday, June 14th, 2024, in Midland, Texas at the age of 85.

John Francis Schartz was born in Ellinwood, Kan. to Peter and Mary Schartz on Dec. 15th, 1938. He graduated from Ellinwood High School and married Jolynn Gilliss on June 13th, 1957. At the time of his passing, they had just celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary. John worked in the oil and gas industry for over 50 years, retiring in 2012 in Midland. He was an avid sports fan, enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking. He dearly loved his family and following all his grandchildren’s activities. He was a man of faith.

John was preceded in death by his parents Peter and Mary Schartz and his sister Mary Beth Gray.

John is survived by Jolynn Schartz his wife, and his six children and their spouses: Jorja and Bub Houk of Wichita, Kan., Jean and Jeff Main of La Crosse, Wisc., Joni and Shawn Swanson of Plano, Texas, JP and Jamie Schartz of Hutchinson, Kan., Jeff and Crystal Schartz of Midland, Texas, and Judy Schartz Miller of Midland, Texas. He is also survived by his 18 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

A Celebration of John’s life will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3rd, 2024, at Bellview Baptist Church, 1710 N. Big Spring St., Midland, TX 79701, with Pastor Raymond Revilla Jr. officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that any memorials be sent to Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch, P.O. Box 1890, Amarillo, TX 79105-9985 in honor of John F. Schartz Memorial or Hospice of Midland, 911 W. Texas Ave.
