Gene Marks, 83, passed away Jan. 22, 2025 at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kan. Born June 7, 1941 he was the son of Herb and Nellie Marks. Gene served in the Air National Guard for eight years and the US Army four years. He graduated from Barton Community College (BCC) with a degree in criminal justice.
On July 1, 1966 he married Vicki Newell. They had one daughter, Tammy.
After graduating from BCC, he was an insurance investigator and then pursued a career in law enforcement for Barton County. He became sheriff in 1976 and served until 1989. For the next 15 years he was a crop adjuster for Wells Fargo until retirement.
He is survived by his wife Vicki; daughter Tammy Rein; three grandchildren, Trey, Trent and Darian; six great grandchildren; sister Mary Bartlett. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Keith Marks and Carl Marks
Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Monday, Jan. 27 at Minnis Chapel, Stafford, Kan. with burial at Stafford Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Barton County Sheriff Office Reserve Fund.
