PAWNEE ROCK — Dorothy G. Bowman, 89, died Sept. 6 at Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood. She was born May 29, 1921, at Walnut Township in Pawnee County, the daughter of Friedrich Heyen and Anna Elisabeth (Gerdes) Hanken. She married Edward Alan Bowman Feb. 24, 1943, at Great Bend. He died Sept. 25, 1999. She was a feature story journalist at the Great Bend Tribune from the 1950s to the 1970s, and was an antique dealer at Pawnee Rock. She had been an Ellinwood resident since 2001, coming from Pawnee Rock.

Mrs. Bowman was a member of United Methodist Church, Pawnee Rock; American Legion Auxiliary past president; and Kansas Press Women. She was a former mayor of Pawnee Rock, and was active with and served on many local and state-wide committees.

Survivors include two sons, Brent Bowman and wife Lorie of Manhattan, and James Bowman and wife Debbie of Albert; one sister, Elda Schroeder of Albert; two grandchildren, Brandon Bowman and Stephine Bowman; and two great-grandchildren, Brett Bowman and Elliott Bowman.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, with the Rev. William F. Johnson officiating. Interment will be at Pawnee Rock Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorial donations to the Barton County Community College Foundation may be made in care of the funeral home. Dorothy Marie Vail Werner, born to Allan P. and Katherine Marie (Phillips) Vail on August 23, 1938, passed away on March 1, 2025.

She was the beloved wife of Robert B. Werner, until his death in 2017. 

Dorothy was a loving mother to her two children, Deborah Werner (Kent) Dietz of Davis, Oklahoma, and Julie Werner (Kevin) Kramp, of Great Bend, KS. 

Dorothy also leaves behind three grandchildren: Justin Kramp, fiancée Kathleen Gier of Mission, KS; Jennifer Kramp Andersen and husband Scott Andersen of Ellinwood, KS; and Kohl Kramp of Ellinwood, KS. Dorothy was a proud great-grandmother to Jillian, Caroline, Audrey, and Hudson Kramp, and Elise and Kai Andersen. She is also survived by her brother, Dr. Charles D. Vail & wife Jeanne of Littleton Colorado.

Dorothy served as director of Ourselves & and Our Families, the coalition for the prevention of child abuse, in Great Bend, for several years, and was a lifelong advocate for children. 

Dorothy enjoyed playing cards, particularly poker and bridge, and made many good friends wherever she went. She was previously involved with the Petroleum Club of Great Bend and Lake Barton Ladies Golf Association, serving as president, and enjoyed the golfer’s bowling league. She participated in various charitable boards in Great Bend. Dorothy loved life and was known for her warmth and kindness.
