Great Bend Fire/EMS

A fire at the Cedar Park Apartments is being investigated as a suspected aggravated arson. Firefighters were dispatched to 3910 Cedar Park Place, Apartment 8A, at 9:23 p.m. Sunday.

Suspect Michael P. Leeper, 27, Great Bend, was located and arrested. He was booked into the Barton County Detention Center early Monday on a charge of aggravated arson, with bond set at $100,000.

The Kansas Fire Marshal’s Office was in Great Bend on Monday to investigate.

Emergency Medical Service made seven ambulance runs Friday, March 31, five Saturday and four Sunday.

Sunday’s fire calls included a report of a gas smell at 11:32 a.m. at Dillons N. 3, 1811 Main. A gas meter was used to check the area and nothing was found.

Then at 7:53 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to the 600 block of Macarthur Road where they found a small campfire where people were roasting marshmallows.

An unauthorized burn was at reported at 9:22 p.m. in the 3100 block of Morton Street that turned out to be a backyard barbecue.


Great Bend Police

A non-injury crash was reported at 9:31 a.m. Friday at Walmart, 3503 10th St.

A sex offense was reported at 2:13 p.m. Friday.

A known person allegedly shoplifted meat Friday afternoon at Walmart. A Notice To Appear (NTA) was signed.

A Great Bend resident reported being scammed out of $1,500 in gift cards.

A vehicle was stopped at 8:11 p.m. Friday at 16th and Washington. Jared Scheck was arrested and booked early Saturday on charges of driving under the influence, possession of a firearm under the influence, illegal transportation of liquor and speeding. He was released after posting a $1,000 surety bond.

A Great Bend resident reported a subject transferring money from her PayPal account.

An NTA was signed and served on a known person after it was reported she had shoplifted items from Walmart.

A traffic stop at 9:59 p.m. Friday at Cleveland and Lakin was reported as a narcotics violation. A K-9 unit was deployed.

A K-9 was deployed at 10:30 p.m. Friday in the 1000 block of Heizer Street.

A K-9 was deployed at 2:52 a.m. Saturday in the area of North Green and West 1st Street in Hoisington.

Criminal damage to property was reported at 3:34 a.m. Saturday at an apartment at 3910 Cedar Park Pl. Michael Leeper allegedly damaged the front door. He was arrested on charges of assault on a law enforcement officer and criminal trespass. He was released after posting a $1,000 surety bond through Ace Bail Bonds.

A Great Bend resident reported his credit card being used without his permission.

Someone slashed a window screen at 2110 25th St., it was reported Saturday.

K-9 Menta was used during a traffic stop at 10:28 p.m. Saturday at 10th and McKinley.

During a warrant arrest at 2:54 p.m. Sunday at 2600 24th St., an officer arrested Dustin B. Young for felony interference with a law enforcement officer. He was also booked on the warrant for reportedly failing to comply with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation offender registration requirements. He has been registered as a violent offender since 2015. 

K-9 Menta was used on a Barton County Sheriff’s Office traffic stop in the alleyway of 4th and Walnut Street at 6:27 p.m. Sunday.

A K-9 was also deployed at 1:28 a.m. Monday at 10th and Wilson Street.
