IUKA — Two vehicles collided Thursday afternoon in Pratt County, resulting in a Great Bend resident being taken to Pratt Regional Hospital with what appeared to be a serious injury. A second Great Bend resident had what were believed to be minor injuries.

Kansas Highway Patrol reports the crash occurred at 1:11 p.m. on July 25 on U.S. 281, 137 feet south of McLellan St. in Iuka. A 2016 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Guy Knipe, 71, of Great Bend, was southbound and attempted to turn onto Summer Street. A 1995 Freightliner pulling a trailer was also southbound and ran into the rear of the Equinox.

Knipe had what appeared to be minor injuries but his passenger, Dorothy Piland, 91, was more seriously injured. Both were wearing seat belts.

Piland died later that day.

The truck driver, 72-year-old James Griffith of Iuka, had no apparent injuries. He was also wearing a seat belt.
