The Barton County Sheriff’s Office made two arrests after a traffic stop Tuesday morning near Ellinwood. There was a brief manhunt when the driver, Gefferey Palacio, 21, Great Bend, fled on foot, Sheriff Brian Bellendir reports.

The BCSO stopped a maroon Ford Focus at about 10:15 a.m. on Aug. 27 in the 100 block of Southeast 105 Avenue, near the river bridge just south of Ellinwood.

“When the deputy stopped the vehicle, the driver exited and fled on foot into the riverbed,” Bellendir stated in a news release.

“The second occupant of the vehicle, later identified as Natasha Robinson, age 20 of Larned, stayed with the vehicle. Upon questioning, Robinson provided false information to the officers and was later arrested for interference with a law enforcement officer as well as an outstanding warrant from the Barton County District Court for probation violation.”

Officers quickly surrounded the area and located Palacio, who had outstanding warrants through the city of Great Bend. He was also charged with interference of a law enforcement officer, and operating a motor vehicle without a driver’s license, and was issued a citation for a defective windshield.

Both were transported to Barton County Jail without incident and booked. As of late Wednesday morning, they were still in jail in lieu of bond.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Ellinwood Police Department and the Kansas Highway Patrol.
