STAFFORD — Time to Celebrate Stafford! Oktoberfest is Saturday, Oct. 5 and there is something for everyone. Larabee Library will be having our Sixth Annual Louan Talley Medallion Hunt. Rules and information will be on our Nora Larabee Memorial Library Facebook page and Clues will start dropping at 9 a.m. It’s a fun way to make memories with friends, family and maybe win the prize of $100. Plus, Nora E Larabee Library board members will be on the stage at the Oktoberfest around 4. They will be announcing how to win a prize sponsored by the Library. The Stafford Alumni Association have been busy getting the Alumni Banquet organized. Plan on good food and an entertaining evening. They have worked months to revise and update the “Alumni Red Book.” This book has been a priceless source of information for generations. Now you can have updated information, great pictures and lists of graduates for the low price of $20.
I spent Friday at a grant writing workshop in St. John. I would like to thank Ryan Russell of Stafford County Economic Development for a very informative workshop with an impressive amount of information about Federal, State and local money available to our rural area. Presenters were Nancy Daniels from K-State Extension, representatives of Hud, Kansas Rural Water Association, Kansas Housing Resource Commission, and Commerce. The workshop was co-sponsored by South Central Community Foundation, Golden Belt Community Foundation and 21 Central Extension District. Wow! That’s a long list of heavy hitters in information for rural Kansas.
When I reflect back to all the progress Larabee Library has made, grants have made much of it possible. A big part in getting a grant is being able to show that there is a local need and local support to keep supporting the project. Thanks go to our community that supports keeping Stafford relevant and a great place to live.
We welcome preschool kids aged 0-3 and an adult to “Making Memories at Nora’s Place” 10-11:00 every Monday morning. Reading stories and a great play area make for a fun time for all. Sandy and I have really enjoyed hosting this fun time for kids. Of course, kids are welcome whenever we are open.
New Service at the Library – I have a photo scanner set up in the library. This can be used to scan photos onto your own digital device. It is a good way to preserve, share, organize and enjoy your photos. If you are interested, stop in and we’ll figure it all out.
Sandy has processed our newest series of books, “Bridgerton.” It has been made into a Netflix movie series. A patron asked InterLibrary Loan for “The Duke and I,” the first book in the series, and I could tell it would be a great read for our patrons. If you like family sagas set in Georgian era England with romance thrown in you’ll like “Bridgerton.”
Our new reading challenge “Fall Into Books” starts Oct. 1st and ends at the end of the year. It’s a fun way to find new genres and authors and win a prize.
The Senior Center and the Library are partners in engaging a representative from SouthWest Kansas Area Agency on Aging at the library, on Nov. 7 for Medicare Open enrollment. Save the date and call us for an appointment.
