When children arrive for classes on Wednesday morning at Lincoln Elementary School in Great Bend, most of their school supplies will be waiting for them.

Lincoln Principal Misty Straub said school supplies have been donated or purchased by the school. All that children will need to bring are their backpacks, pencil boxes and water bottles.

Last year, after school supplies became clearance items at a local business, about half of Lincoln’s needed supplies for the following year were donated, Straub said. The school used money from its budget to purchase the other half.

That wasn’t the only school to benefit from local donations. At the end of the last school year, Sunflower Electric Power Corporation invited local teachers to submit a wish list. According to Angie Anderson at Sunflower Electric, employees collected donations and recently donated them to the schools.

Many students in Great Bend received free backpacks filled with school supplies on Saturday during Party in the Park at Veterans Memorial Park. Hope For Our City, Great Bend, handed out items donated by area churches.

School supply lists and other information can be found on the USD 428 website, greatbendschool.net.

Drive carefully

With classes resuming this week at Great Bend schools, officials are reminding motorists to be safe when driving to watch for youths.

Children are reminded to use crosswalks to cross the street. When picking up or dropping off children at the school, it is best to establish a routine so children know where to go. Parents should not park in the loading zone but use designated parking areas.

Classes for Great Bend USD 428 grades K-6, 7 and 9 start Wednesday, Aug. 14. Grades 8 and 10-12 start Thursday.

All five of Great Bend’s public elementary schools were set to welcome students back to school with open houses on Monday. Students were invited to drop off their backpacks and stopped in to meet their teachers.

At Holy Family Catholic School, classes start Wednesday with a 12:30 p.m. dismissal time for the first day. Holy Family’s STARters start school on Thursday and Pre-K starts Friday.
