Shown is a sample of the work in Salina by Hutchinson artist Brady Scott. Starting next week, Scott will paint a sunflower-themed mural on the walls of the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce building.

About the artist Brady Scott

Brady Scott is an freelance artist and designer from Hutchinson who works full-time for Luminous Neon Art & Sign Systems. He has made a significant artistic impact on the regional mural scene through numerous installations in Hutchinson, including at the Kansas State Fairgrounds, as well as a contributor to the first Salina “BOOM!” Mural Festival in 2022.

Starting Monday, sunflowers will begin blooming on the walls of the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce building, 1125 Williams St.

That’s when Hutchinson artist Brady Scott will begin his work creating a sunflower-inspired mural on the north and east walls, said chamber President Megan Barfield. This is part of the county mural effort through the Barton Arts Movement, a grass-roots committee operating under the Golden Belt Community Foundation.

“He’ll be here for about a week,” Barfield said. Although the final design remains under wraps, “there will be no defined edges (to the work). It will be free-flowing artwork that wraps around to the front of the building.”

Kansas Pro Wash of Great Bend will be on site over the weekend to clean the surface so Scott will have a clean canvas. Due to the size of the painting, a scissor lift from KanEquip will be needed for Scott to reach the top, Barfield said.

“I’m excited to watch this develop over the course of the week,” she said. “It will look great.”

BAM received a $3,000 leadership gift for this project from the estate of Reta Brack, a long-time chamber supporter, community volunteer, and lover of sunflowers. The rest of the needed funding has been secured through donations.

BAM exists to create community pride through public art and has facilitated nearly 10 projects in Barton County since 2021. “BAM has been working on a beautiful project for the north side of our building, and we’re excited to share the next steps with our chamber members today,” Barfield said.
