One death, one seriously injured in apparent electrocution incident Tuesday
accident at airport hangar 2024
First responders were summoned to the site of an apparent electrocution accident at the Great Bend Municipal Airport at approximately 8 a.m. Tuesday morning.

One Wichita man was killed and another seriously injured in an accidental electrocution while working on a hangar at the Great Bend Municipal Airport Tuesday morning, according to the Barton County Sheriff’s Office.

Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir reported Tuesday that at about 8:15 a.m., emergency personnel were dispatched to the airport in regard to an accidental electrocution report.

Upon arrival, crews discovered two victims, who were working in a bucket on an aerial boom when they came into contact with high-voltage power lines.

One of the victims, Allistar Jose Sanchez, 24, Wichita, managed to get onto the roof and was able to reach the ground.

The other victim, Ivan Joel Mollins, 16, Wichita, was still in the bucket on the boom and was non-responsive. By 8:48 a.m., rescue personnel were able to reach the second victim when power was shut off. Both were transported to University of Kansas Health System - Great Bend campus.

Sanchez, who received serious burns, was later transported to a Wichita area hospital.

Mollins was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Because the accident occurred on city property and involved a city building, the Great Bend Police Department requested that the Sheriff’s Office handle the investigation.

City Administrator Logan Burns reported on Aug. 5 that crews from the Hays-based Roofmasters company would start replacing siding on the main hangar that day with plans for the work to be done in time for Airfest. The siding replacement was one of the remaining projects prompted by a hailstorm in July 2023.

When contacted Tuesday afternoon about the incident, staff was informed that Roofmasters owner Tyler Haines, Hays, was not available for comment.

The Sheriff’s office was assisted at the scene by the Great Bend Police Department, Great Bend Fire Department and EMS and Midwest Energy.
