K&O Railroad contacted the Barton County Sheriff’s Office at 4:39 a.m. Tuesday to report an intersection was blocked at East Barton County Road and SE 90 Ave. for a train derailment with overturned grain hoppers.
The derailment, located about two miles west of Ellinwood, was visible from U.S. 56.
This was a courtesy call as no one was injured, there were no fires or hazardous materials, and no county equipment or assistance was needed. The caller said a total of seven cars had overturned, and the intersection would be blocked until everything was cleaned up.
Kansas Department of Transportation put up barricades.

BCSO deputies and other responders were still at the site as of 9 a.m. Tuesday. Lt. Rick Popp from the BSCO said they were waiting for a locomotive to move the upright cars, and he expected the intersection would be open by the end of the day.
