TOPEKA —The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) issued an Emergency Order of Suspension on Oct. 17 to a day care home at 901 Stone in Great Bend, Kan., licensed under the name Rhonda’s Day Care Home. It is operated by Rhonda Weingrad.
On Aug. 19, an eight-month-old infant was transported to the emergency room after the infant was observed to be lethargic while in the licensee’s day care home. The child was hospitalized due to injuries, which included a non-accidental brain injury. The opinion of the doctors is that the brain injury occurred on Aug. 19 while in the licenses’s care, according to the Suspension Order.
The Emergency Order of Suspension was effective immediately on Oct. 17 and shall remian in effect until the issuance of an order rescinding this order.
”The Licensee is prohibited from caring for children at the home,”said Miranda Steele, director of communications for KDHE. “The order is subject to appeal.”
She said the delay in filing the Suspension Order was due to the Medical Examiner determining when and where they injury occurred.
State law allows the Secretary of KDHE to issue such an order when, in the opinion of the Secretary, the order is necessary to protect children in the home from any potential threat to health or safety. The order is subject to appeal.
