Student volunteers from Great Bend High School delivered new books to the libraries of each of Great Bend’s elementary schools Monday morning. It was one way Martin Luther King Day was celebrated, because as Linn Hogg with Volunteers In Action said, King believed all people should work hard to get the best education they could.
Volunteers in Action sought and received a grant from the Kansas Volunteer Commission for the Martin Luther King Day project.
“We were able to cover all elementary schools in Great Bend , and the public library too,” she said.
A budget of $100 per library yielded nine to 10 books each.
Hogg explained to the students the importance of volunteerism, and Brianna Schartz, a member of the National Honor Society and Kayettes, and Selam Ball, a member of the GBHS Student Council, were on hand to reinforce the message. They will return to Riley Elementary later this week for a day of community service project.
“If any of you go with your parents to do things like help with church, you are already volunteering,” Hogg said. “As you get older, your volunteering becomes references for jobs and can also help you get scholarships for college. Plus, it makes you feel really good to help other people.”
