MACKSVILLE — With school back in session, the 2023 Summer Reading Program at the Macksville City Library has come to a close. Library Director Jody Suiter shared a recap:

We embraced the All Together Now theme with puzzles, games, books, special speakers, and TEAM-work reminding participants that “Together Everyone Achieves More.”

It was a dream come true to host Summer Reading in our new library addition! For the first time, ever, we were able to spread out, beyond the walls of our former one-room library. And, while we are still raising funds for shelves and furnishings, the kids didn’t ever complain. They found books to read on carts, in crates, on tables and even on the floor. And, our catchphrase for this summer was — “It’s like a treasure hunt ... You may not find THE book you’re looking for, but you’ll find something amazing along the way!”

Many sponsors helped make our Summer Reading program a huge success, and a large portion of the items purchased will make a positive difference in our programming and our facility for years to come.

A generous $2,250 Summer Reading grant from Dollar General helped us purchase a rolling metal cubby bookshelf for board books, two mobile bulletin/white boards, a wide variety of books for our collection, book bags for all participants, Brag Tags, craft supplies, and stuffed book buddies for all ages.

Other sponsors and supporters were: Golden Belt Telephone, providing $100 for Summer Reading prizes. A $100 donation from the Pratt Walmart. A $100 Summer Reading grant from SCKLS. Tokens from The Country Store in Macksville. Cookies from VBS & Library Board Members. Free Programs were given by the Kansas Wetlands Education Center and Smoky Hills Public Television. And, dedicated volunteers, like Eileen L. & Suzanna R., helped with crafts, stories and more.

Six kids had perfect attendance for all six story hours, and we recognize the commitment of the adults in their lives who made that possible. Congrats to Natalie D., Edith R., Hallie V., Hudson V., Cooper L. and Emma V.  The lucky winners for our grand prize drawings were Andres R. for 6th grade and under, Joana L. for young adult, and Haleigh W. for adults.
