A Great Bend resident was rescued from an early Sunday morning house fire as firefighters battled sub-zero temperatures as well as the flames, Great Bend Fire Chief Luke McCormick said.

The Great Bend Fire Department responded at 3:49 a.m. Sunday to 403 Buckeye St. for the structure fire. The residence was still occupied, McCormick said.

Upon first arriving, crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the home. Firefighters quickly entered and where able to successfully locate and save one resident.

The department, with the assistance of Ellinwood and Albert fire departments, battled extreme cold to extinguish the blaze. At the time of the fire, the temperature was -4 with a wind chill of -14. Crews remained on scene most of the morning.

Also assisting was the Great Bend Police Department. The Office of Kansas State Fire Marshal was called in to establish the cause of the fire, but as of now it remains undetermined.
