CLAFLIN – To add a new splash of color and summer vibes to the City of Claflin’s swimming pool, the mural-promoting group Barton Arts Movement has selected the facility’s entrance as its next project. BAM is still seeking the last of the funds needed to make it a reality.

“We’re excited about this next project in Claflin this summer,” said Andrea Bauer, who is spearheading effort for BAM. “We’re planning for early summer installation.”

But, she said, “the timeline is still a little fluid at this point.” Great Bend artist Anna Popp will handle the creative endeavors, but she is finishing up the school year at the University of Kansas where she is an art major.

“Creating community pride through public art is BAM’s main focus, but an opportunity to support our very own aspiring artists in Barton County is the icing on the cake,” Bauer said. “Anna worked in Atwood last summer on a large exterior mural, we’re thrilled that she’s able to make her mark in Claflin this summer. “

It is truly a win-win. “The City of Claflin is excited to upgrade its pool entrance,” she said.

However,  the project will be paid for by private donations. “We have almost reached our fundraising goal of $3,000 for this project thanks to the support of several generous businesses,” she said. The Barton Arts Movement started as an online conversation in 2020 and has since snowballed, resulting in new public art throughout Barton County.

The goal of BAM is to create community pride through public art. It is a grass-roots, volunteer-driven organization operating under the umbrella of the Golden Belt Community Foundation. To join as a donor, volunteer, or submit an idea, visit  www.BartonArtsMovement.com.
