Barton Community College will help area high school seniors plan for their futures at various Senior Days events with attendance capped at 45 students per session. Social distancing guidelines will be strictly followed and masks will be required. Each day will run from 9:30 a.m. until noon with an optional tour following lunch from 12:30 to 1 p.m.

The schedule is as follows: 

Feb. 10 – Performing Arts/Undecided or Liberal Studies

Feb. 11 – Agriculture and Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)

Feb. 17 – Business and Criminal Justice

Feb. 18 – Undecided or Liberal Studies

The format will be condensed and will include an information session titled “A Day in the Life of a Barton Student,” along with prize drawings and optional tours. Lunch is included.

All participants will be entered in a drawing for a chance to win a $500 scholarship at each of the Senior Days.

Director of Admissions Tana Cooper encourages all seniors in the area to attend, even if they plan to go straight to a four-year school.

“It is a great idea to at least come and visit and fill out the admissions application and take a look around campus,” she said. “Things are constantly being updated and evolving out here, and I think some of our local students would be surprised at how much has maybe changed since they were last out here.”

Cooper also noted that by filling out the admissions application a student also completes the Barton Bound Scholarship application. 

“This scholarship program allows students from the state of Kansas with GPAs from 2.5-4.0 to get scholarship dollars from Barton,” she said. “I think it’s important students realize that awarded scholarship money turns into actual cash in their pockets later in life when they have all kinds of bills to pay and things they want to buy. This is money that can go towards a house down payment, car payment or even a fun vacation later in life instead of student loan payments.”

Cooper said there is much to know about Barton’s programs and opportunities.

“Barton offers many of the same classes as four-year schools, but at less than half the cost, and some of Barton’s career and technical programs take only a year to complete and can lead to a rewarding career,” she said. “Some students may already think they are going elsewhere, but it never hurts to come and visit and have a backup plan. It’s a fun and free day.”
