There was an entry in the Great Bend Police Department call log that noted a battery of a juvenile was reported at 9:05 a.m. Friday,  May 12, at Cherished Blessings Child Development Center, 4500 10th St. A notice to appear was signed and served on an individual.

Cherished Blessings Owner and Director Nicole Hertel said the alleged incident involved a teacher, and Hertel sent a message out to the parents of those enrolled at the facility. She stressed they are taking it very seriously and are following all protocols in response to the allegation.

The message reads:

“Dear parents, I am writing to inform you all of an incident that happened at our facility last Tuesday. I was made aware of it on Thursday evening.

“We had a teacher report to me that she saw another teacher bite a child while in our care. I informed this child’s parents of the allegation first thing on Friday morning and made a report to (the Kansas Department of Children and Families) to allow them to do an investigation and determine whether or not this allegation is correct.

“The teacher who has been accused has been placed on leave pending this investigation.”

When contacted by the Great Bend Tribune, Hertel said in an email the parents of this child have filed their own police report and “are pressing charges on the alleged adult to help get some clarification and move forward.”

This is what led to the log posting, she said.

“We are cooperating with authorities and would like to have clarification on this incident as well,” she said.
