A convicted felon who allegedly broke into a Great Bend residence and physically assaulted the occupants Saturday evening was shot by one of the homeowners, the Great Bend Police Department reports. Zachary Horyna, 27, was later flown by Eagle Med air ambulance to Wichita, where his condition was reported as “stable” Monday morning. The homeowners at 1302 Jefferson St. were treated for injuries that evening by Great Bend Emergency Medical Service.

A convicted felon who allegedly broke into a Great Bend residence and physically assaulted the occupants Saturday evening was shot by one of the homeowners, the Great Bend Police Department reports. Zachary Horyna, 27, was later flown by Eagle Med to a Wichita hospital. By Tuesday he had been released from the hospital, Detective Heather Smith said. The case will be submitted to the county attorney for possible prosecution and she anticipates an arrest warrant will be served “depending on his condition.” The wound is still considered critical because of its location.
According to reports, officers were dispatched to the residence at 7:17 p.m. They were advised that a male subject had entered the residence and a disturbance was taking place. They found Horyna with a gunshot wound to his face.
Horyna was restrained and treated by Great Bend EMS, then transported to the University of Kansas Health System - Great Bend Campus before being flown to a Wichita hospital.
Preliminary investigation shows Horyna entered the residence, and when confronted by the homeowners he began to physically assault them. During the disturbance, he was shot.
According to the Kansas Department of Corrections website, Zachary Cole Horyna had been discharged from the KDOC on July 26, when his sentence for previous convictions expired. On Jan. 24 he was released to Barton County under post-release supervision.
His past convictions, no longer active, include drug possession and possession of paraphernalia with five or more plants, committed Nov. 28, 2014, in Saline County; drug possession in Sedgwick County in 2017; and criminal possession of a weapon in Sedgwick County in 2018.
