The friendly  softball game Saturday evening, July 17, at Brit Spaugh Park was called United on the Diamond Classic #1. The Great Bend Police and Fire Departments and the Barton County Sheriff’s Office had 19 players on the Guns and Hoses team. They played the Oxford House’s 22-member Sober Mafia.

Guns and Hoses won with a score of 34 over 14 after nine innings. The Sober Mafia presented a trophy to Guns and Hoses that can be used in years to come as they plan on making this an annual event.

The evening was a lot of fun as the two teams were on the field, said Great Bend Fire Chief Luke McCormick, who was one of the participants.

During the game, songs were played such as “Who let the Dogs Out” and “Bad Boys.” When Guns and Hoses scored, a siren was sounded as the runner came into home plate. At the end of the game, they played the song “I Fought the Law and the Law Won.”

Hamburgers were sold and the money raised will help Oxford House residents attend the world convention.

“It was just meant to unite law enforcement with people who had once been in trouble,” said Barb Esfeld, who helped organize the event.
