Last days of Spring Break
Book Nook.jpg

Greetings from the Great Bend Public Library. OK kids, enjoy the next few precious days and parents rejoice because Spring Break is almost over. Today Thursday the 20th is a full day of Spring Break at the library. Starting with Genealogy Corner at 11 a.m., followed by Reading to Luna at 3:30 p.m. During Spring Break, readers can earn double the points for each minute read to Luna. Lastly, starting at 5:30 p.m. we have our next Teen Manga & Anime Club meeting. For our March meeting we are watching and discussing “Medalist” by Tsurumaikada. Afterwards, we will make cherry blossom paintings to celebrate spring.

To close out our week of Spring Break we have two events on Friday, starting with our Cabin Retreat Scavenger Hunt. All day long look for lakeside activities around the library you might find on a woodsy cabin retreat. Find them all and you might just get a treat. Then at 3:45 p.m. that afternoon, teens can join us for our latest Teen Café. Miss Haylee will teach you how to make some slime that’s delicious enough to eat using marshmallows and some common kitchen ingredients!

Saturday is the first of our six-week gardening class taught by Veronica Coons of the Barton County Conservation District, in conjunction with the Barton County Master Gardeners. If you’re looking to perk up your garden this spring and summer season this is your chance to learn from some experts.

Monday we have Crafternoons for kiddos ages 6-12. This class is a bit different because we are requiring those wishing to participate to register ahead of time since this is a very special crafternoon where we will be learning woodworking and we have a limited number of kits available. If you would like to have your little one participate please call the library at 620-792-2409 or stop by to register.

Next Tuesday we have our regular lineup of Baby Bounce at 9:30 a.m. and Early Literacy Story Time at 10:30 a.m., followed by Tech Tuesday at 11 a.m. We’ve added the Crafty Crochet Club at 4 p.m. Kids grades 3-12 can learn from a seasoned fiber artist how to craft adorable creations. No experience is necessary. Each month we will spend an hour working on a different project. After the instructional session, you are welcome to continue to meet on your own at the same time each week to finish your project. You may request help if staff is available. This month each participant will get a kit with everything they need to make a little highland cow plush. We only have a few spots open so register now on our website if you’re interested.

Wednesday we are back in action with Tween Scene from 3:30 to 5 p.m. to give tweens grades 3-5 a preview of the Teen Spot and its events.

Lastly, Thursday, March 27, in addition to Genealogy and Luna we will be hosting our next Trivia at Dry Lake Brewing. This time the theme is Hunger Games. We will be covering the first four books and all five movies. Now’s the time to brush up on the series or just hope that the odds will be forever in your favor. Speaking of Hunger Games, this is a great time to remind everyone that the new Hunger Games novel “Sunrise on the Reaping” has just released so keep an eye out for it soon at the Great Bend Public Library.
