It’s Banned Books Week at GBPL
Book Nook.jpg

Greetings from the Great Bend Public Library, and Happy Banned Books Week! This year’s theme is “Freed Between the Lines.” Do you know which book was banned because it contained talking animals? How about which book was banned for potentially bringing harm to fathers? Find out the answers to these questions and more by checking out our displays in the Adult’s and Children’s collections. To learn more about your right to choose what you read, visit bannedbooksweek.org.

After our regular Genealogy Thursday at 11 a.m., our Pet Partner, Luna, will be here in the afternoon from 3:30 to 5 p.m. to listen to any of her friends who want to visit. Come practice reading out loud and receive a free book signed by Luna herself for successfully reading ten books to her this fall. Since today is the fourth Thursday of the month, participants may read more than one book to reach this goal.

October is Fire Prevention Month. After our Tuesday morning Baby Bounce Story Time at 9:30 a.m., bring your kiddos to our special Fire Department Story Time at 10:30 a.m. Members of the Great Bend Fire Department will be at the library to read a book and talk about fire prevention. Children will be able to see real fire equipment up close and ask questions about the job of being a firefighter.

Have you signed up for the Smokey Bear Reading Challenge? Come celebrate Smokey’s 80th birthday by reading about wildfire prevention, forests, and natural resource careers while exploring our local environment. Join us next Thursday to pick up a challenge sheet and enjoy a film about some of our national parks to complete one of the reading challenge tasks. The same film will be showing at 1:30 p.m. and at 3:30 p.m. to accommodate different schedules.

Ready to cook up something tasty? Come to the library at 6 p.m. next Thursday evening for Lisa’s Delicious Dishes.

Raise your steins next Thursday evening at our Oktoberfest Trivia at Dry Lake Brewing. Test your knowledge of the world’s largest beer festival. Register teams of up to four ahead of time on our website or come in person at 6:30 p.m. to sign up so we can get started at 7 p.m.

To see what else we are up to at the library, find us on social media @greatbendpl and visit our website, greatbendpl.info. You can also message us on Facebook, email us at gbcirc@gmail.com, or give us a call at 620-792-2409 with any questions about our programming or services.
