Celebrate art in Lucas at Friday Follies

LUCAS – Art and creative activities all over town will welcome visitors to Lucas on Friday, April 1. The theme of the day is “Friday Follies” and will include opportunities to meet artists, local art site tours, hands-on art activities, an art show and sale, along with lunch and even fortune telling and live music.

Lunch will be available at the Lucas Community Center, 252 W. Main, featuring Brant’s Meats sausage. A sandwich brown-bag lunch can be picked up at Switchgrass Art Cooperative, 208 S. Main.

All sites are within a few blocks and traveling between sites is easily walkable. Close parking will be available for those who need to drive.

The Grassroots Art Center, 213 S. Main, will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Garden of Eden, 305 E. Second, will be open for tours from 1-4 p.m. The Roadside Sideshow Expo will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Switchgrass Art Cooperative will celebrate its new building grand opening from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Lucas Chamber of Commerce will present an art show and sale with concession stand at the Community Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. All day, Bowl Plaza, the quirkiest public restroom, will be open and celebrating its 10-year anniversary on South Main. 

Opportunities to meet artists are: 

• Works in progress by Matt Farley on the grounds of the Old Blue Studio, 106 S. Main, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

• Mri-Pilar on site at her Garden of Isis installation inside the Deeble House, 126 S. Fairview, from 1-4 p.m.

• Bob Mix answering questions about his work exhibited at the Grassroots Art Center from 2-3 p.m.

• Barbara McCreery’s sequin and found-object dioramas open house from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at 132 S. Fairview

Special creative events are:

• Fortune telling by Erika Nelson at the Roadside Sideshow Expo from 2-4 p.m.

• Lunch talk by Matt Farley about the Florence Deeble Rock Garden restoration, 126 S. Fairview, at noon

• Make artist trading cards with artist Donna Hicks at Switchgrass from 3-4 p.m.

• A blindfold paint activity at the Grassroots Art Center at 3 p.m.

The day will culminate at Switchgrass with refreshments and live music by Gordon Pfannenstiel from 4-6 p.m.
