Darrell O. Batchman, 80, died Dec. 9, 2016, at Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood. Born July 21, 1936, at Great Bend, he was the son of Alvin Otis and Neva Grace (Stone) Batchman. On Aug. 7, 1955, he married Audrey Ann Geil at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Albert. She died July 27, 2016. A lifetime Barton County resident, Mr. Batchman was electrician group leader for Marlette Homes, worked in preventive maintenance at United Technology (Essex), and retired as an electrician at Larned State Hospital. Leslie Lowell Workman, 78, died Dec. 8, 2016, at his home in Great Bend. Born June 14, 1938, at Great Bend, he was the son of Leslie Lowell and Mathilda (Krkosska) Workman Sr. On April 15, 1972, he married Jean Marie Mausolf at Peace Lutheran Church in Albert. A lifetime Great Bend resident, he was a serviceman for NCR. He enjoyed attracting purple martins, was involved in Boy Scouts and loved his grandchildren.
Doris June McFarren, 84, died Dec. 1, 2016, at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center in Topeka. Born Oct. 31, 1932, at Brownell, she was the daughter of John and Bertha (Foos) Helwig. On Nov. 30, 1950, she married Clayton McFarren at Bazine. He died Feb. 23, 2010. A Great Bend resident since 1972, coming from Dighton, Mrs. McFarren was a grocery store clerk and bookkeeper for McFarren Motors.
ODIN - Eleanor M. Reif, 93, died Dec. 4, 2016, at Country Place Senior Living in Hoisington. She was born April 22, 1923, in rural Redwing, the daughter of Adolph and Caroline (Linsner) Demel. Eleanor graduated from Odin High School and then married her sweetheart, Anton J. "Tony" Reif, on Oct. 20, 1942, in Odin. He preceded her in death on May 19, 2011.
Darrell I. Rexwinkle, 80, died Dec. 4, 2016, at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend. Born June 3, 1936, at Edna, he was the son of Clifford L. and Opaline O. (Goodwin) Rexwinkle. On March 12, 1955, he married Dixie Colleen Childress at Valeda. A Great Bend resident since 1969, coming from rural northeast Oklahoma, he was a ranch hand, a cattle buyer for Thies Packing, a diesel mechanic for R & S Transportation, and maintenance man for Barton County Historical Society.
ELLINWOOD - Ural G. "Jack" Clair, 86, died Dec. 4, 2016, at Ellinwood District Hospital. Born Oct. 10, 1930, in rural Edwards County, he was the son of Thomas and Frieda Ingerham Clair. In 1948 he graduated from Lewis High School. On Nov. 27, 1952, he married Jeanette Kowalsky in San Francisco, Calif. She died on Oct. 22, 1987. On Dec. 7, 1990, he married Bernita K. Urban Schloemer in Ellinwood. She died on April 27, 2015. He was the owner of Jack's Welding, retiring in 1995.
Able Lee King Jr., 60, died Nov. 25, 2016, at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born Dec. 26, 1955, he was the son of Able Lee and Nancy (Harris) King. On May 16, 1985, he married Shirley A. McCoy, at Montrose, Ark.
Howard Nathan "Nate" Davis, 78, died Nov. 30, 2016, at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born Oct. 15, 1938, at Lawton, Okla., he was the son of Howard W. and Mary Doris (Ketchum) Davis. He married Natalyn C. Gould Dec. 25, 1959, at Duncan, Okla. A longtime Great Bend resident, coming from Gunnison, Colo., Mr. Davis worked in maintenance and security for Central Kansas Medical Center and Turner Farms for many years.
MINNEAPOLIS, Kan. - Ralph "Jim" Irving Carson, 62, of Minneapolis, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 30, at Salina Regional Health Center. He was born April 7, 1954, in Salina, the son of Donna L. (Shelton) and Jimmie Kent Carson. He worked as an inventory control supervisor at Great Bend Manufacturing and was a machinist at Great Plains Manufacturing. He married Peggy Coleen Belden on April 21, 1973, in Salina.
HAYS - Alfreda J. "Freda" Broetzmann, 78, died Nov. 29, 2016, at her home in Hays. Born Sept. 25, 1938, in Schaffer, she was the daughter of Phillip and Esther (Tittel) Foos. She grew up in Great Bend, a graduate of Great Bend High School, moving to Hays in 2011. On May 27, 1956, she married Ronald E. Broetzmann at Holyrood. She was a bookkeeper at the Kansas Wildlife and Parks Department in Pratt for ten years. She enjoyed reading, cooking, her family and spending time with her grandchildren.
