Wanda Sue Ybarra, 67, lifelong Great Bend resident, passed away at her home early on Friday morning, Feb. 3, 2017, after a lengthy illness. Wanda was born on Feb. 22, 1949, at Great Bend, to Gilbert Clyde and Alma Elvira (Ochs) Scheuerman. She attended school in the Ellinwood School District at Ellinwood, and was united in marriage to Peter Paul Ybarra on Dec. 30, 1975, at Miami, Okla. Wanda worked as Supervisor of Facilities Management at the Barton County Courthouse in Great Bend for 29 years, retiring on Aug. 1, 2016.
BAZINE - Beverly Erb, 68, passed away on Jan. 31, 2017, at Country Living in Larned. Born on April 13, 1948, in Lawrence, she was the daughter of L.A. (Roy) and Marjorie Cochran Krug. In 1966 she graduated from Ness City High School and attended Kansas State University. On June 1, 1984, she married Stan Erb in Bazine. He survives.
WICHITA - Paul Edward Spacil, 71, passed away Jan. 27, 2017, in Wichita. He was born in Great Bend and raised in Ellinwood. He retired in 2011 after 42 years of service as a teacher, administrator and adjunct professor in the Wichita Public Schools and Catholic Diocese of Wichita. Up to his passing, he had also served as Credit Union of America Board Chairman.
BAZINE - Samuel Bruntz, 93, went to meet his Lord and Savior on Jan. 27, 2017. Born July 16, 1923, in Bazine, he was the son of Jacob and Eva Bruntz. He lived his life in Bazine, where he farmed and worked in the oil field. He married Esther Schoenhals in 1950 and raised a family of four sons in Bazine. His retirement was spent at his shop in Bazine restoring antique tractors and small engines. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Those hearts that knew him are broken and he will be dearly missed.
LYONS - Orville E. Stroh, (Ret.) 79, died Jan. 25, 2017, in Little River. Born, Nov. 22, 1937, in Wilson, he was the son of Aaron and Anna (Nuss) Stroh. In 1960, he married Beverly Brown in Norfolk, Va. She preceded him in death. He owned Stroh Realty and Auction in Lyons.
Rose Eva Magie, 94, died Jan. 28, 2017, at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend. Born Feb. 8, 1922, at Claflin, she was the daughter of Joseph E. and Anna (Wolfel) Reif. On May 22, 1992, she married Dale Magie at Great Bend. He died May 1, 1996. A Great Bend resident since 1978, coming from Ellsworth, she worked for Essex.
Lucille Kathryn Hickel Branan, 90, died Jan. 2, 2017, at Hopewest Hospice, Grand Junction, Colo. She was born Nov. 3, 1926, at Redwing, the daughter of Emil and Magdelena (Courange) Hickel. She married Leo A. Kaiser April 24, 1945, at Beaver, Kansas. He died Sept. 29, 1961. She then married R. L. "Bob" Branan Jan. 15, 1973, at Claflin. He died Apr. 26, 2008. Mrs. Branan was a lifetime resident of Barton County.
LARNED - Paula Diane Wells, 74, passed away Jan. 24, 2017, at Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood. Born June 7, 194,2 in Wichita, she was the daughter of Clarence W. and Winnifred M. Seglem Gallegher. A lifetime area resident she was a retired secretary at the Larned State Hospital. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, canning vegetables, western movies and eating ice cream, but especially loved watching Tyler and Trent play football and collecting grandchildren memorabilia.
HAYS - Juliana Dreher Unrein, 83, joined the Lord Thursday, Jan. 19, 2017, at St. Mary-Corwin Hospital in Pueblo, Colo. She was born Dec. 21, 1933, in Rush County the daughter of Philip and Wilhelmina (Schuckman) Dreher. On Sept. 10, 1951, she married LaVerne J. "Vernie" Unrein. He preceded her in death on Sept. 3, 2012. She was a homemaker and motel owner.
LARNED - Francis (Frank) Patrick Callahan Jr. 60, passed away Jan. 21, 2017, at his home in Larned, after a year long battle with brain cancer. He was born Oct. 2, 1956, in Larned, the son of Francis P. Sr. and Hazel D. Skelton Callahan. A graduate of Washburn University, he received his Bachelors Degree in Business. A lifetime area resident, he was a Licensed American Family Insurance Agent for 28 years, working at the Larned location for 23 years then added the Great Bend location five years ago. Ruth L. White, 91, died Jan. 22, 2017, at Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood. Born Dec. 4, 1925, at Great Bend, she was the daughter of Arthur A. and Mary Ellen (Keenan) Campbell. On Jan. 11, 1947, she married William A. White at St. John. He died Oct. 10, 2005. A lifetime Great Bend resident, she was a homemaker. Besides being a loving and caring wife and mother, she enjoyed baking, cards, dominoes, marbles, needlework and word search puzzles.
